Why build a house when you can 3D print it: in the United States they are already beginning to be sold
It is, some say, the next big step for 3D printers: go to large-scale solutions and move on to printing houses, which would thus avoid having to be built with traditional methods. In the United States there is already a first house for sale in the town of Riverhead, in New York.
That 3D-printed house costs $ 299,999 there — a price that’s not too high for that market — and according to its builder, from the SQ4D printing company, “this is the future,” since this printing system is “fast, cheap” and with “strong” houses as a result.
Build 10 times faster and for half the price
Kirk Andersen, director of operations at that company, assured in comments to CNN how his Autonomous Robotic Construction System (ARCS) can be ready at the construction site in six to eight hours.
From that moment start creating the cement layers one by one, something that allows you to create the foundations, the floor, and the interior and exterior structures of the walls.
For another of its managers, “the cost of construction is 50% lower than the cost of comparable new construction houses in Riverhead, New York, and we do it 10 times faster“.
That first home that has been put up for sale has a total area of 130 square meters, and it has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and even a car garage.
Manufacturing with the ARCS system reduce also the necessary personnel for the construction to only three people, and according to those responsible, much less energy is used in the process. Many of the traditional tasks are eliminated or consolidated, and the use of cement also helps reduce costs.
This house has managed to be put up for sale after receiving the certificate of habitability, something that has not been easy due to the strict regulations that regulate this type of construction. It remains to be seen if this technology ends up confirming its advantages and expanding, but the truth is that the idea is striking.
