A judge fines Google for posting false reviews of hotels in France
When we are looking for accommodation we always look at the ratings and opinions of the clients, so what if those ratings are not real? It has been shown that Google followed another procedure, and not the agreed one, to value more than 7,500 establishments in France.
The sentence has already come out and has been communicated by Google from its European headquarters in Ireland. The internet giant agrees to pay the fine of 1.1 million euros and acknowledges the errorBut we’d better start at the beginning of this unique story.
The national and international antitrust bodies in charge of supervising companies have not only been working for a few weeks, which is when we have started to hear from them, but they have been with us for many years.
The French national competition and consumer control body initiated an investigation in 2019 where it was revealed that Google had begun to act without complying with the agreement. And it is not the first time that Google has received an antitrust complaint.
They realized that Google was implementing a rating system that was not the official one agreed by the French public tourism office, but that it had replaced that with a system by one with stars, but based on own criteria and that had confused companies, hoteliers, users, consumers, etc.
The investigation revealed that this deceptive practice had affected more than 7,500 establishments through Google Maps and Google’s own search engine. If Google gave 5 stars to a hotel, this rating did not match the rating issued by the French public tourism office.
It is for this reason, and after a thorough investigation, that the French national competition and consumer control body declared that Google was carrying out deceptive practices. Now the prosecutor has asked Google to pay a fine of 1.1 million euros and asked him to change the grades and show the official ones following the agreed criteria.
So, those of us who travel to France, we can be sure that the hotel ratings will be correct, so if a hotel has 5 stars it is because it really deserves it and has achieved it with the sum of the user ratings .
