Augmented reality at the service of fashion: Chanel launches an application to find the perfect lipstick
The fashion industry allies with technology to reach its consumers in times of social distancing, how do you know from home that the color of your new lipstick is correct?
Online shopping was already an important sector of the economy, but with the arrival of the pandemic and mobility restrictions it has become the lifeblood of many brands. People don’t go to stores as much to try products, so stores will have to be brought home to them.
This is the idea behind the Chanel proposal that has just announced its new application, an intelligent software with augmented reality to show us the lipstick color that best matches our skin tone. It is not the first to get something similar, other cosmetic brands like Mac, Maybelline, and Bobbi Brown They have also surrendered to the powers of this technology to help their customers when shopping online.
Chanel’s artificial intelligence algorithm has been trained to detect skin tones and search over 400 lipstick shades to find the perfect match. The system must analyze the entire image to understand skin tone and separate it from the environment that influences it.
As many readers will know, a Chanel lipstick is an investment that can last a lifetime if used with care, it is a luxury product whose price is around 40 euros. It is not a decision to take lightly or rush, choosing the right color is decisive and online, without being able to try the product on your own skin, it is almost like shopping with your eyes closed.
For now, that application is exclusively available to iOS users, on Android we only find the official online store, but not the lipscanner. Its operation is quite simple, the application allows us Upload any photo, whether of a pair of shoes, a bag, an enamel or some flowers, in search of that color we want.
The specific tone can be selected, in case the object will have more than one tone and color. The software will recommend several lipsticks with that shade and glossy or matte finishes for you to try with augmented reality.
Through the camera, Chanel paints the person’s lips in the shade she has chosen and that image can be saved on the phone or shared with other people on social networks. In the end, if the result convinces you, you can include the lipstick in the shopping bag. It is always advisable to take all these photos near a window in natural daylight, instead of the light of a lamp that can have a stronger color and distort the skin tone.
It does not seem to be yet available in Spain through the Apple Store, we have not had access to it and we have not been able to verify its skill with the tonalities. Chanel Lipscanner is one of many applications with artificial intelligence and augmented reality that have reached the market to facilitate the decision to buy a bag, makeup, a piece of furniture or a television without leaving the sofa.
