HarmonyOS will arrive on Huawei phones in April 2021: they will start with the flagships and the Mate X2 will be the first
Huawei promised in 2019 that HarmonyOS, your own operating system, would reach mobile phones in 2021. An ambitious deadline taking into account how complex it is to develop an operating system of its own, which can also compete directly with Android, which they now specify again by saying that HarmonyOS 2.0 is coming to Huawei’s high-end phones soon.
The manufacturer has taken advantage of the official presentation of the Huawei Mate X2, its latest foldable device to rise as this year’s first flagship. The new hybrid between mobile and tablet arrives with EMUI 11 on Android (without Google services), but will be the first to receive an operating system version.
Anticipating your own plans
It has been Richard Yu who again has been in charge of bringing such important news for the brand’s mobile division. After showing us and talking about the new foldable, the CEO added at the end of the presentation at the end of the presentation that users will be able to upgrade to HarmonyOS in April, although not all mobile phones of the brand:
“Users of a Huawei flagship will be able to upgrade their phones to HarmonyOS in April. The Huawei Mate X2 will be the first to be upgradeable […].” Richard Yu
When discussing the HarmonyOS mobile roadmap, Yu commented that OpenHarmony (the source code for HarmonyOS) supports devices with between 128KB and 128MB of RAM (such as smart watches, televisions, or infotainment systems) and that as of From April 2021, support would be offered for devices with between 128 MB and 4 GB of RAM memory, so that from October 2021 OpenHarmony would have support for devices with 4 GB of RAM or more. With today’s announcement, the company would have been ahead of its roadmap And speaking of a stable version of the system that can be reached by any user with the right mobile.
As you may remember, the first public beta for China came out recently and is available to Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro, Huawei Mate 30, Huawei Mate30 Pro Y Huawei MatePad Pro. A beta with which we saw that HarmonyOS has more Android than we thought, something that on the other hand was quite predictable due to the complexity of developing an operating system from scratch, with the appropriate compatibility and at the level of the competition in such a “short” time (although they have been preparing it for years).
In this way, as we have said in his article, the Huawei Mate X2 will arrive first with EMUI 11 on Android 10. But if Yu’s words are fulfilled, in about two months the users of this exclusive device will be able to update it to the operating system of the brand.
After this announcement our heads go a little Huawei P50 as these are part of that first batch of flagships upgradable to HarmonyOS. The announcement has been somewhat more specific, but without specifying models or exactly what version will be the one we see, so we will have to wait a little longer to know what we can see, on which phones and if, above all, we can finally test it. outside china, since it has not clarified whether it will be something global or for this market, such as betas.
