LG opens webOS to other manufacturers: its operating system for televisions can be found together with more than 20 brands
webOS is no longer exclusive to LG. The company has announced a radical change in strategy regarding its operating system for televisions. LG will continue to maintain and develop webOS TV openly, but will license the system to other manufacturers may include it in their televisions.
At the moment, we have about 20 brands that have been included in this new ecosystem that is now being born. In the same way that Android TV is used openly in multiple brands, webOS will cease to be LG’s system to become one more option. A movement that has the “potential to reshape the television business,” according to LG itself.
“powered by webOS TV”
Recently, LG has announced the version webOS 6.0 for your future 2021 TVs, along with a major redesign. However, wait that the televisions of other companies that bet on webOS include version 5.0 by default.
Among the brands that have joined the webOS ecosystem we find small television manufacturers that to date were betting on their own system. This is the case of RCA, Ayonz or Konka. Under the nomenclature of “powered by webOS TV”, different brands will be able to take advantage of LG’s system, which has many years of experience.
Beyond television manufacturers, we find component manufacturers such as Realtek, Nuance or Gracenote, brands such as Hyundai that could implement webOS in some of their vehicles or projects and service companies, which have partnered with LG to ensure that their streaming platforms they work right.
This is the case of Netflix, Youtube, RakutenTV, DAZN or Prime Video. Thanks to its presence, the televisions of the companies of the webOS ecosystem will be able to offer a Magic Motion remote control with shortcuts to these platforms.
With this decision, LG will expand the availability of LG Channels, which will be available on the system of these televisions. Services and content are one of the companies’ sources of income and with this move, what LG is doing is offering its system in exchange for expanding the reach of its services with advertising. By expanding the reach of webOS, LG will also be able to get more usage data to know how users use it and what improvements could be incorporated.
