So you can ensure better quality during video calls
They play several aspects, such as the quality of the connection, the characteristics of the equipment in which you are communicating and additional devices that can optimize the call.
Video calls became for many in the new offices, meeting rooms or classrooms. With the changes that the pandemic has brought, we now spend several hours connected in these virtual spaces to coordinate day-to-day tasks.
In the middle of these types of channels, multiple failures can be registered that lead to the experience not being the best or make it difficult to interact with the people with whom we need to communicate.
Several factors play in this regard, such as a good connection, have a computer that is compatible with the application we are running, have additional devices that can improve the call and even make use of some of the tools that these programs have to see us much better. Here are the key things to focus on if you want your video call to be a success.
Having a stable connection makes all the difference. This ensures that our acquaintances can see and hear us well and that a fluid conversation can take place.
This is why it is important to ensure that during these times you can get the most out of your internet connection to achieve better stability. Try to ensure that during the time you are in communication, the program or application you use is the only one running.
“Having applications in the background can deteriorate the quality of the call. These platforms, even when we are not using them, consume machine resources, which causes slowness, ”explains Harold Morales, head of video & OTT design and implementation engineering at Claro Colombia.

If you are from a computer and have a Windows operating system, you can check Through alt + sup which are the applications that are consuming the most memory inside the device at that moment. This command will display the control panel, which will allow you to stop or close those programs that you are not using and that can reduce the performance of your video call.
Having applications in the background can deteriorate the quality of the call
In the case that it is a connection by a mobile device, in the configuration section you will find the applications option, which will show you which of them is spending more resources on the computer at that moment. This way you will be able to identify them and close them for as long as you require.
Staying in a fixed place helps to avoid jumps in the connectionSo find a location close to your router for the best possible signal. And if you can, connect it to the network cable and do not use the Wi-Fi.
“If it is wired, the computer is as if the person were on a highway alone, it will not affect him if other people are connected. A call is never going to drop over a wired connection. It is safer and more reliable, ”says Andrés Rodríguez, Video Design and Implementation Engineer at Claro Colombia.

Here also plays the factor of latency, which is the time in which data transmission is achieved on a network. If you are making a video call here in Colombia, the recommended latency would be around 50 milliseconds, on average. In the case of international communication, the latency must be around 100 milliseconds to be considered good.
There are currently on the market various applications, paid and free, that help measure latency who is having communication at that time. This will help you to check in advance if you have a suitable connection to proceed with the communication.
What to check on the team?
Do not ignore the device from which you are connecting. In the market there are several options of applications and programs to make the video call, each of them has clear compatibility specifications.
For this, you must check that the video calling platform can be executed in the operating system you are using. If you have one that no longer has dealer support, as is the case with Windows Vista and XP, you are going to have a lot of trouble getting the program to run properly.
In addition, it is important that you have the latest version of the application. These updates are aimed at optimizing video processing and expanding tool options.
Also consider your computer’s camera. If your computer has a VGA camera, which has a very low image resolution, consider purchasing an additional device to improve the quality of the video you transmit.

In the market there are many options, and everything will depend on what activity you are going to carry out with that video call. If it is a normal communication of your workspace or class, you can look at a camera with a resolution of minimum 720P, with 30 FPS.
If you need an even cleaner video image, there are much more powerful devices on the market that stream in 4K, Ultra HD, with 90 FPS.
“An additional camera can help to adjust and dim the image and achieve better lighting,” clarifies Monica Bravo, VC regional manager of Logitech.
Some webcams have built-in omni-directional microphones, with alternatives to reduce ambient noise. They have a higher cost, but are worth it for the convenience.
When you go to buy one, it is important to check what is the operating system of your computer and which is the video calling application that you use most frequently, so you can verify that the equipment you buy is compatible with these and that its configuration is easier.
An additional camera can help adjust and dim the image for better lighting.
Having a suitable and comfortable space can facilitate your video call. Choose a place in the house where you always have good lighting, that is not backlit, as this will make you just a dark silhouette.
“You should always place the camera at eye level, this will give a correct and flattering shot during the conversation,” explains Bravo. Likewise, the expert adds, it is better to avoid large prints, stripes and patterns that can distract people from the communication.
Filters and backgrounds, widely offered by video calling apps, They can be great allies, especially if we do not have an office, study or a fixed place from which to connect.

“These tools provide the opportunity to reduce distractions when we are speaking, since people will not focus on seeing the space from which the person is connecting. In addition, orProvides more privacy if the person does not want to show where in their home they are making the call”, Says Laura Terán, collaboration and productivity engineer at Google Cloud Colombia.
It is best to test them beforehand and do tests to choose which is the bottom or filter with which you feel most comfortable.
