The strength of vaccines is already being seen in Spain: in less than a month, infections fall by 95% in residences
I’m not going to beat around the bush. The week of January 18, 2021, just as the peak of the third wave reached its maximum, there were 4,895 infected among residential users. A month later, on February 15, 2021, that figure fell to 243, 95% less. In that same week, the last for which we have data, five autonomous communities registered zero infections in their residences. Already no need to go outside to check the effect of the vaccines, just look at the residences.
And it is that, for the first time in what we have of a pandemic, the Government published the data yesterday of the incidence of COVID-19 in homes for the elderly and people with disabilities. The data is chilling (29,408 deaths from the disease; 3,200 in this one) and we only have weekly details of what we have in 2021, but there is news that leaves room for hope: the fall in infections and deaths is much faster than the general population.
The strength of vaccines is already being noticed
It is no coincidence that, on December 27, the national vaccination campaign began precisely with the residences. They have not only been the group hardest hit by the pandemic, but still in considerable vulnerability. You just have to see that, of the 86,219 residents have been officially infected in the more than 5,400 residences in the country, 19,056 correspond to 2021.
In the IMSERSO dataWe can also observe one of the most complicated epidemiological processes of so far this year: like the effect of the third wave which increased the cases in the second and third week of the year gave way to the vaccines which was beginning to stimulate the immune systems.
It is evident that we have a structural problem in the residences; a problem that we will have to reflect (deeply) on in the future. However, little by little, the good news is taking shape and this country, with less than four million vaccines already administered, begins to experience firsthand the power of vaccines.
