Ericsson will not participate in the Mobile World Congress 2021, alleges security reasons and responsibility before COVID-19
During yesterday the GSMA ad the plan for celebrate MWC 2021 in Barcelona. The event will take place at the end of June and there are a series of security measures to access the fair. Nevertheless, history is repeating itself last year, Ericsson is the first to confirm that they will not attend the event.
As Ericsson Spain has confirmed to Xataka, this year they have decided not participate in the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that is held from June 28 to July 1. They say this is due to “the continuing effects of Covid-19 and taking into account that our main responsibility is the health and well-being of our people.”
According to Ericsson, they are not closed to future events and they look forward to “continuing to work closely with GSMA and industry partners.” Ericsson is one of the biggest exhibitors at the technology fair and this decision may pose a situation similar to last year, when companies one after another in chain confirmed their non-participation. In February 2020 they fell LG, Amazon, Intel, NTT and Gigaset among others before officially the event will be canceled.
The measures proposed by GSMA
With or without the assistance of Ericsson, MWC 2021 is currently going to be held. Of course, with caution. The GSMA (which organizes the event) has imposed a series of measures to prevent infections at the event. Measures especially necessary in a place that will host thousands of people for several days.
In addition to the use of mandatory FFP2 masks, health and personal hygiene questionnaires … there are measures to access the enclosure. The GSMA is asking attendees to submit negative COVID-19 tests before boarding planes to travel to Catalonia. Tests will also be performed in situ and rapid tests will be carried out that will have to be repeated every 72 hours. In the enclosures there will be temperature controls and disinfection equipment for attendees.
GSMA does not expect a participation as immense as other years, but they believe that MWC 2021 can also be held safely and in person. Now, it remains to be seen whether the exhibiting companies agree with this or not.
