Public TV and audiovisual industry: from Colombia to the world / Opinion
The audiovisual industry and Colombian public television have always occupied a fundamental place in our homes. I remember sitting down every Sunday in the living room of my house, together with my whole family, to follow the national TV programming. As a Colombian, I have felt immense pride every time an audiovisual production of ours wins an international award. That is what we dream for the audiovisual industry and the public media: that they can exploit their talent and be recognized throughout the world.
Without a doubt, each of the 82 audiovisual productions financially supported by the national government last year in 33 municipalities of 20 departments, together with the investment that was made in our regional and national public channels, are an example of their dedication for contributing to the maturity of the multicultural reality that beats in our regions and cities and that this can be expressed, represented and recognized with total autonomy aesthetics and politics.
This year, at the ICT Ministry we increased to $ 311,000 million ($ 19,500 million more than in 2020) the budget allocated for our public TV and audiovisual industry. From this figure, We will allocate $ 24,013 million to benefit and accompany 91 audiovisual projects that reflect the quality of Colombian talent, cultural diversity and the plurality of voices in 6 different calls that we will open from March 9 to 19.. On May 28, the projects selected by the 18 juries will be known.
The first, for $ 18,364 million, is aimed at audiovisual producers to benefit 42 projects, 3 of them for productions made by women and 4 for adults over 60 years of age. The second, for $ 2,290 million, is aimed at audiovisual production companies in the region, for 14 projects; the third is aimed at indigenous communities, for $ 1,037 million to benefit 13 projects; the fourth for Rom and NARP communities for $ 1,026 million for 9 projects; the fifth for non-profit operators for $ 648 million for 4 projects; and the sixth for community operators for $ 648 million for 9 projects. The ICT Ministry will accompany them in all phases: pre-production, production and post-production, in the genres of fiction, documentary, animation and chronicle in web series.
But it is not only about opening calls, but about accompanying the industry and producers to open doors all over the world. For this reason, the idea is to create a great international fair where we can not only show the audiovisual products arising from the calls but also bring filming from other countries and become a destination par excellence for international production companies. In October we will make this dream come true of exhibiting our audiovisual production to the world. That is the economic reactivation that the sector needs.
The time has come to think about those national audiovisual products that will not only boost the economy and protect jobs, but will also show the world the quality of national talent. Colombians can export high quality audiovisual products for all audiences in the world.
For example, the idea is that these audiovisual productions receive the same international recognition as those presented by our public TV in the eighth edition of the TAL awards, held last year in Uruguay, where we won awards in 10 categories, including Best Documentary Series regional and Better regional identity and inclusion content, high-quality productions benefited with the $ 266,000 million that The Government of President Iván Duque allocated in 2020 for the infrastructure of the channels and strengthening the creativity of national television and multiplatform production.
In fact, some of the award-winning Colombian productions made by Canal Trece, Telepacífico, Canal Capital and Signal Colombia began to be broadcast in 14 countries through Red TAL, achieving an international position and generating a space for co-production, exchange and strengthening of the public service television systems in Latin America.
These results show that it is possible to dream big; that our television and multiplatform audiovisual productions created thanks to the talent of our actors, producers, librettists and cameramen, seduce audiences in any international market and that their productions will be our next export product par excellence from Colombia to the world.
