This soccer ball is made with LEGO style pieces, without air, but when kicked it is the same as a standard one
Here we have the soccer ball of the future. Airless, repairable, customizable, and with the same bounce and the same resistance as a conventional ball. Or so its creators say …
The football it is one of the favorite sports in poor or developing countries. It is played on the streets of Africa, South America, Asia … The problem is that a regulation soccer ball is easily damaged and difficult to repair. When air is punctured or leaked, for many children without resources it is difficult to access a compressed air pump with which to inflate it.
The sports equipment company Molten has allied with the Japanese design agency Nendo to create My Football Kit, a ball that is various with LEGO-style pieces, without air, but it has the same physical characteristics of weight, bounce of the ball and resistance to movement that a conventional regulation ball.
Its development is inspired by the structure of the traditional Japanese woven bamboo ball. You can see the assembly process and its characteristics in this video:
As we can see, the assembly is very similar to LEGO products, it even has a step-by-step instruction manual.
There are three types of components for a total of 54 pieces. You don’t need air, so it is not punctured or requires a compressed air pump. Instead of relying on internal air pressure, it makes use of the elasticity of its surface material.
The soft components of recycled polypropylene and elastomeric synthetic resin allow can be played with bare feet without hurting yourself. And according to Press release, the weight, bounce, and the feel of the ball when hitting it, is the same as a conventional regulation ball.
Thanks to its modular construction, it has other advantages. If a piece breaks, due to the interlocking structure the ball does not fall apart. Just put a new piece in its place, and it will be like new.
There are also pieces of different colors that allow you to customize the balls, and even exchange pieces with friends.
On a more commercial level, how will they be sold folded without mottling take up much less space, which makes transportation cheaper. While a conventional Molten box fits 12 inflated balls, 20 My Football Kit can fit in the same space.
It is a very interesting idea, but at the moment Molten has not announced when this will be put on. airless soccer ball for sale, or its price.
