The first remote tattoo, thanks to the 5G connection
Its creators call it “The Impossible Tattoo”. A name that no longer works. For the first time, the first tattoo has been completed remotely and in real time, thanks to the magic of the 5G connection.
It is a big mistake to assume that the 5G connection it is like 4G, but faster. The 5G connection also means less latency and more bandwidth, which allows you to do things unthinkable until now. As for example, carry out a remote tattoo.
“The tattoo is a ritual. There must be a connection between the tattoo artist and the person who will carry the tattoo“explains Dutch tattoo artist Wes.
We have seen many robots that are operated remotely. Even we can do it ourselves. But it is one thing to move a robot vacuum around the house or draw remotely with your finger on someone else’s tablet, and quite another. stick a needle into someone else’s skin, and pretend to draw a picture with it. Now it is possible thanks to the technology provided by the 5G connection, as you can see in this video:
It is an initiative promoted by the telephone company T-Mobile Netherlands, to promote their 5G networks. But even if it has an advertising motivation, it is something very complex to carry out.
As we see in the video, the process is carried out in real time, the only way possible. An interesting aspect is that the tattoo artist does not operate the needle remotely through a camera. He is not looking at the tattooed arm, but is holding the tattoo on a plastic arm.
A robotic arm equipped with sensors records the movements of the tattooist’s hand, and sends them over a 5G connection to another robotic arm located elsewhere, to carry out the needle insertion.
This is only possible thanks to the low latency and high speed of the 5G connection, which allows the movements of the tattooist’s hand to be instantly reflected on the tattooer’s robotic arm.
Any delay (latency) or stop in the connection would be fatal for the tattoo to look good. And here you can not erase and start over …
Although it is a simple tattoo of small size, and the video does not let us see too much, it is an example of what the 5G connection will offer us in the future.
From autonomous cars to the smart home or connected objects, it will be a revolution in the coming years.
