Using the mobile phone at the wheel will make us lose double the points: the Government sends the reform of the Traffic Law to the Courts
Last December the General Directorate of Traffic advancement that throughout 2021 They would toughen penalties for breaking certain rules behind the wheel. Now these new sanctions are one step closer to arriving, since the Council of Ministers has approved the bill Y has sent the reform of the Traffic Law to the Courts.
In this way, there is only one more step left: that the Cortes approve it, something that is expected to happen this year. When it occurs, some of the behaviors that generate the most risk, such as using a mobile phone behind the wheel or not wearing a seat belt, will be penalized with more points. Many? In the case of using the mobile while driving, twice.
Six points and a 200 euro fine
Today the penalty for using the mobile phone behind the wheel consists of the loss of three points of the card and a fine of 200 euros. Let us remember that a new driver (less than three years of experience) has eight points that then go up to 12 if he goes two years without committing infractions, to 14 if he goes another three years without infractions and to 15 if he gets another three years without committing infractions.
What the new Traffic Law proposes is to double the loss of points in the case of using the mobile phone at the wheel. Thus, according to the Ministry of the Interior, driving while holding mobile phone devices while driving will be penalized with loss of six points instead of three. You do not need to be using it, but just have it in your hand. The financial penalty, however, will remain the same: 200 euros.

On the other hand, the Ministry of the Interior has confirmed that not to use the seat belt, child restraint systems, the case or other protective elements will be sanctioned with four points instead of three dots. Finally, it is committed to safe driving courses to improve road safety, courses with which two points can be recovered.
In any case, now it will be time to wait for the Courts to approve the proposal and it becomes Law. Only last year Traffic fined 3,877,297 drivers. Speeding tickets led the rankings comfortably, followed by not undergoing the ITV or having an unfavorable ITV and those related to mobile phones, of which 96,181 fines were imposed.
