The HomePod mini has a temperature and humidity sensor: it measures just 1.5 millimeters and until now it was not known that it was there
Apple does not usually discuss the internal specifications of its products, so we often have to wait for the products to go on sale and someone to analyze them to find out what is inside. Still, some specs can still be escaped, such as the fact that el HomePod mini have for example a hidden temperature and humidity sensor.
According relata BloombergApple included an idle hidden sensor in the HomePod mini that can measure temperature and humidity. It’s been there since the beginning, but since Apple didn’t mention it or use it, no one knew about it. Apple is expected activate it at any time with a software update that brings new features to the smart speaker.
The component it barely measures 1.5 x 1.5 millimeters of size. Unlike other components, it is not located in the central part but on a lower edge of the plastic case and near the power cord. This also implies that it is intended to measure external environmental conditions.
Whether or not Apple decides to activate this sensor and use it is something that we will know only with time. In principle it can be an ally to indicate the temperature of the place and act as a thermostat. You can also regulate the operation of other devices connected by HomeKit and depending on the temperature and humidity conditions in the house. For example, turn on a fan whenever the room temperature rises above 30 degrees Celsius.
New HomePods with integrated display
There are more surprises. The Bloomberg report mentions other than this sensor in the HomePod mini, new speakers in development. According to Mark Gurman, Apple is working on HomePod models that come with a built-in display. Currently the HomePod has no display, but other competing speakers like the Nest Hub Max from Google, the Echo Show from Amazon and the Portal of Facebook they do bring it.
The screens in smart speakers have several functions, the most interesting of all is be able to navigate more comfortably when using the device. But they can also be used to watch videos, make video calls or even as a photo frame. Regarding the HomePod, from MacRumors indicate that there are hints of FaceTime for HomePod in one of the recent versions of Apple’s software.
At the moment the only thing that is clear is that Apple’s HomePod line is somewhat confusing. Weeks ago they abandoned the production and sale of the HomePodto focus solely on the HomePod mini, a strange move that makes it unclear what will happen to Apple’s smart speakers.
