Disney remakes its release plan for 2021 and follows in Warner’s footsteps, premiering ‘Black Widow’ and ‘Cruella’ in theaters and Disney +
A new blow on the table and a new swerve in the premiere plans by Disney +, in one of those movements that force its competitors to carefully review their plans for the year. The ghost of the pandemic continues to hover over standard display and traditional windows distribution, and Disney + seems to have noticed the devastating plan to premiere at the same time in theaters and streaming of Warner. With its own additions, of course.
To begin with, it is not the first time that he has done it. ‘Soul‘, ‘Mulan‘ The ‘Raya and the last dragon‘They were also seen by rooms, but this time it is different: although’Cruella‘if it is comparable to’ Mulan ‘as a live-action derivation of an animated classic, it is the first time that Disney has carried out this strategy with a Marvel movie,’Black widow‘, which was clearly destined for theatrical release. That is to say, With this premiere, it opens a parallel exhibition path in streaming that may not have a reverse gear.
The other difference with Warner is that Disney +, in a move that clearly corroborates that experiments in this regard with ‘Mulan’ and ‘Raya’ have been successful (although there are no official figures), will charge a bonus for viewing these films on its platform. You will have to pay an extra $ 30 to enjoy ‘Black Widow’ and ‘Cruella’. The one that gets rid of this treatment is the new Pixar film, ‘Luca’, which, following in the footsteps of ‘Soul’, can be seen at no extra cost.
A reformulated calendar
This decision comes hand in hand with a new delay in the premiere of ‘Black Widow’ (despite the first forecasts), which runs from May 7 to July 9. It is clear that once Phase 4 of the MCU is underway there is no going back, so Disney is being cautious.. Very possibly, yes, we will not see more changes: with the lifeguard in streaming Disney +, and with the company having detected that a theatrical-only release is very risky, the Marvel Universe may not experience any further delays.
Obviously the next Marvel movie, ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’, suffers the consequent delay also and goes to September. They are also delayed ‘Free Guy’, ‘The King’s Man: The First Mission’, ‘Deep Water’ y ‘Death on the Nile’. For now It is not known if the play of the simultaneous premiere on Disney + will also take place with them: possibly the result of ‘Black Widow’ holds the key to that decision.
The Disney calendar for 2021 is as follows:
- ‘Cruella‘: May 28 (cinemas and Disney +)
