The best smart locks to control from your mobile
If practically all household appliances and devices in the home already work connected to the Internet to provide them with some additional functions, why not the doors as well? By replacing the lock with an intelligent model like the participants in this comparison, we can control them from the mobile phone, guaranteeing keyless access and allowing exhaustive control of who enters and leaves the house.
How does a smart lock work?
Despite what may seem at first glance, Its operation is very simple. Once installed on the door (each model requires different steps, as we will see in the comparison), they are linked to the smartphone via Bluetooth and / or Wi-Fi and, through these connections, to a mobile app that allows you to configure its various functions and manage their use.
It is a completely safe system both at the level of being able to enter the house if there is an error (a traditional key can always be used) as well as access by strangers, since all information is always encrypted and any opening of the door is notified to the mobile phone.
The best smart lock
For this comparison we have chosen three smart lock models that adapt to multiple types of door and lock. Is about Nuki Smart Lock 2.0 (winner with an average score of 8.5), Tesa Assa Abloy ENTR (7.5) and ZKTeco AL20DB (7).
Of them, it has been valued:
– Design. The materials that have been used for its construction, the feeling of durability and how it adapts to the different types of doors and bowlers.
– Installation. How many elements to install, how is the process, if tools are necessary and if it is easy and fast or not. We have also taken into account whether it is necessary to pay attention or have any additional accessories.
– Setting. In addition to its ease, how it is done: in some cases the smartphone and there is no other option, in others everything is customizable from the lock itself …
– Smart functions. What exactly does the lock allow: open remotely, use different unlocking methods, check the registry from the web …
– Functioning. Once installed and configured, how does each lock work? Does it give errors? Do you correctly recognize the position of the inhabitants of the house and open and close the door for them when necessary?
– Others. Some additional aspects such as the use of the battery or internal battery, the accessories that can be used to complement the functions, and so on.
This is how we have tested them
For three months we have tested the different locks participating in this comparison that, in all cases, have been installed on the home’s access door. We have carried out the installation ourselves following the instructions for each model, as well as the configuration. From there, we have tested all its functions, including giving access to other users either through their mobile phones, or with codes or fingerprints.
The winning smart lock, due to the breadth of its possibilities, is Nuki Smart Lock 2.0 which, in our case, we have tested together with the Bridge; the accessory that provides Wi-Fi connectivity and can be purchased in a pack.
Nuki Smart Lock 2.0 smart lock
Its assembly is very simple– Comes with two brackets to fit different types of bowler. One of them for those that protrude from the door, which is tightened with some screws; and another for those who don’t, which comes with a 3M sticker. During testing we have used the second. We have to say that we finally had to stick it with mounting adhesive, since the weight of the device and the force it makes when turning the key ended up taking it off after a few weeks of use.
Once the support is installed inside the door, the key is inserted into the lock and the Nuki itself is placed, which is automatically anchored. It remains to configure it through the mobile app to be able to control the lock remotely. The pack that we have tested, Nuki Combo 2.0, also comes with a Bridge, which adds Wi-Fi connectivity to the set and, therefore, allows you to control it from anywhere, establish routines, use the lock with smart assistants, to notify you if it opens or close the door …
The management of all the functions from the application is extremely simpleBeing able, among others, to establish an automatic unlocking function that opens the door when you approach it, which works really well and is very useful when, for example, you arrive loaded with the purchase.
Our choice and best value for money
It can also be programmed to automatically close when you leave, authorize users to enter without a key, and so on.
Smart lock Tesa Assa Abloy ENTR
Its installation is somewhat different from that of the winner of the comparison although, not for that reason, more complicated. In this case, you have to remove the cylinder that has the door, because this lock has its own built-in. So the process goes through placing it and fixing it so that it is installed. Before doing so, of course, it is advisable to check that the trim is compatible because, otherwise, there will be a hole on the outside of the door.
Done this, The lock will open with a remote control, fingerprint reader or numeric keypad (purchased separately), or from the smartphone. It’s funny that the mobile device is essentially a key, and not so much a configuration tool. It can be used as such, but the app interface is confusing and the changes are not always applied to the lock, so it is best to manage everything directly from the equipment itself and its touch panel: from activating and deactivating controls to managing the mode. automatic or manual, authorize mobile phones … The instructions are very detailed.
It works with an internal battery that is charged by microUSB, it automatically locks the key when the door is closed, beeps if it stays open … It comes with two physical keys and a remote control.
ZKTeco AL20DB smart biometric lock
Its main attraction is that integrates a biometric panel and a numeric keypad to facilitate access to the home; therefore, one of the main differences from other models is that a lock module is installed on each side of the door. Hence also that it is only suitable for interiors, as it is not waterproof. In addition, it is opened with a key or with the smartphone, which connects via Bluetooth, so it must be within the range of action. The same applies to configuring your options.
The app allows, for example, keep an exhaustive control of who enters and leaves the house, establish access time slots for certain people, create codes for guests …
With biometric panel
A very curious function is that, to improve security, the lock detects these codes even before and after other random digits are entered. With four batteries, it beeps when the charge is running low.
