Does turmeric help you lose weight? This is what science says
Turmeric has been shown to have beneficial properties for our health, but can it also help us lose weight? Let’s see what science says about it.
Thanks to its excellent properties, turmeric has gained a lot of popularity in recent years and today more and more people are incorporating it into their diet. It is a ginger-like root widely used in Indian cuisine and has myriad applications. For example, it is the ingredient that gives curry the yellow color and the one that gives all the properties to golden milk, one of the most desired superfoods today.
Turmeric stands out especially for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which make it recommended for the treatment of pain, diabetes, cancer or heart disease. In fact, according to some studies, turmeric is more effective for pain than acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
The beneficial properties of turmeric are attributed to a compound called curcumin. Some investigations suggest that curcumin may suppress inflammatory markers that are often elevated in people who are overweight or obese.
Other small studio revealed that a group of 44 people who were unable to lose weight managed to lose weight by taking a curcumin supplement twice a day. On the other hand, a review of 21 studies of more than 1,600 people related curcumin intake to weight loss, BMI, and waist circumference, as well as an increase in the levels of adiponectin, a hormone that helps regulate metabolism.
Despite these promising results, more research is still needed to find out if turmeric actually helps you lose weight.
