Video dating? This is the option that Facebook works on
Confinement due to the pandemic has affected various aspects of the daily lives of the world’s population, including the relationships. In this sense, the large platforms, such as Facebook, have come up against the ‘new normal’: the social network has set up a page for users to get to know each other through of short videos. Its use would be free, like most dating apps on the market.
Although the application is not ready yet, some details are known about how it would work: appointments would be carried out by video call, via ‘Sparked’, developed by the team working on experimental applications at Mark Zuckerberg’s company.
The company would be experimenting to offer users new ways to date as people get tired of swipe and filter hundreds of profiless. To create the account, a Facebook profile is required. However, the novelty is that there are no public profiles neither works with ‘likes’, nor ‘swiping’, nor ‘direct messages’, as Tinder does.

Instead, the app would cycle through video speed dating that would last four minutes, will that be enough? The number of video appointments a person would have at each event is not yet clear, but the creators of the application assure that “if both have a good time”, it would be possible to schedule a new appointment that this time last ten minutes. If they still want to get to know each other, ‘Sparked’ would suggest that they can exchange information and keep in touch through other social networks like Instagram, iMessage or email.

“Video appointments with friendly people”, those are the words with which the creators of the new Facebook application describe the novelty. Thus, users who want to access this service would have to indicate what makes them a nice couple. These responses would then be reviewed by a human in ‘Sparked’ before the appointments are given.
Additionally, as in other dating apps, people must choose whether they want to date men, women, non-binary people and are asked if they would be open to dating trans people.

This is not the first Facebook dating product, as there is already Facebook Dating that was launched in 2019, but it operates outside of the main application. Even though the NPE team has released several apps, none have been successful, so the eyes are on the novelty they are preparing with Sparked.

At the moment there is no application available for iOS or Android, the use is exclusive of the web browser, we will have to wait for the public’s response and the possibility of taking this model, like its other competitors.
