Batteries: charging the change in electric cars
On the day he turned 30, Enric Asunción stopped and swerved his professional career. It was a doubly special date, because it celebrated the turn of the decade during a friend’s wedding. “There I met Eduard Castañeda and during a long conversation we decided to leave our respective jobs and create the best electric car charger in the world”, Asunción recalls. This determination materialized in 2015 in Wallbox, which now has 100 employees, is in more than 30 countries and expects to exceed five million euros in turnover in its last year. All thanks to a simple product, compatible with any installation and with all electric and hybrid cars on the market. The co-founder and CEO of Wallbox is an industrial engineer and has worked at Applus Idiada and Tesla. Its universal charger works eight times faster than a conventional one.
Ten years to find the holy grail of batteries
“I recognize that I had a part of luck in hitting the exact moment in which we had to start and in which no one else saw the opportunity,” he says. His commitment to the automotive industry is not accidental, since his father worked in the sector and learned from him that innovation is “the key” to grow in this “tough and competitive industry”.
But in addition to this reference, he names “two great mentors” who have accompanied him since the beginning of his current adventure: José María Tarragó, former CEO of Carbures and former vice president of Ficosa, who advises him on industrialization and technology issues, and Juan Campmany , president of DDB, who advises you on brand image. “A mentor gives you a vision based on their experiences, but you have to be clear that stories do not always repeat themselves.”
Asunción imagines the electric car as a new industrial revolution: “It is not just about changing a tank for a battery and a gasoline engine for an electric one, but replacing 80% of the vehicle’s parts, transforming the entire supply industry, workshops, gas stations and even the mobility model. I have always wanted to be part of this revolution that I knew was going to happen soon ”.
