MicroLED: next level in TV picture quality
The televisions without a doubt they are one of the most important elements if we talk about home entertainment. This has made that currently in the market focused teams can be found for all kinds of needs and lifestyles.

Developments in this field have prioritized providing better experience in terms of quality, with lighter and more versatile designs. One of the latest trends and innovations in this field are the MicroLED o Crystal LED, which is emerging as one of the higher level options in terms of image optimization and which can be a good alternative if you are thinking of changing your device for one that has higher pixels and a high resolution. Although it must have a large budget, because these devices are not exactly cheap.

“MicroLEDs are going to redefine what premium experiences at home they mean to consumers around the world, “said Jonghee Han, president of Visual Display at Samsung.
Since the end of last year, this technology It can already be found on televisions from brands such as Samsung, LG and Sony, although there is still no clear date of when they will reach the Colombian market.
The next level
The concept LED It is not new and has been implemented in televisions for several years as the mechanism that is responsible for emitting light, that is when it becomes so important for image quality, since lighting directly affects the brightness, contrast and the depth of the colors.
In the case of MicroLED technology, the difference is that the diodes that compose it have a size of one micrometer, which is much smaller than that of a normal LED, and that makes it possible to have many more within the equipment, that is this is why one screen with this system it can have up to 8 million pixels.
In addition, in this innovation, each of the pixels on the screen, which are green, red and blue, are illuminated individually, unlike the QLED format, which has a main source of brightness at the back that impacts everyone the pixels of the TV.
“The color sheet (pixels) emits its own light and controls it pixel by pixel and it is precisely in this maximum control where the secret to image quality and what makes this technology at a higher level ”, stated Catherin Ospina, Marketing Manager of LG Electronics Colombia.

This feature allows for a much better shine and that in turn the black tones are deeper, since technology means that in the event that a pixel that is not needed at that moment in the image does not turn on, and the dark ones have a greater depth. This element is precisely what ensures that the colors on the screen are very vibrant, but that at the same time there is greater energy efficiency.
Basically, with this technology eliminate backlight and the color filters that are currently used in conventional displays.
This system allows 100 percent of the range of DCI and RGB colors are used in the image being projected, which makes videos taken with high-end DSRL cameras viewable with greater precision.
It normally has 4K resolutions, which allow you to obtain images with a more realistic and vivid appearance, with better visual angles and that in turn have better response times.
In turn, due to the microscopic size of the diodes and the fact that a backlight is not needed, they can be created incredibly thin displays.

So far, the televisions that have been developed with this technology are large, and exceed 100 inches. Even the first screen to be 20 meters long in the world was developed by Sony based on this technology and achieved a resolution of 16K.
MicroLED delivers high-quality, realistic images even when content is viewed up close
“Until now, LED displays were expected to simply be brighter and larger, but MicroLED offers realistic and high-quality images even when the content is viewed up close. The viewing experience is totally different from conventional LED screens, ”said Hitoshi Teshirogi, Sony’s director of display product design, during the presentation of this technology on his devices.
One of the difficulties of this model is that of its production at scale, which means that the prices of these devices are not low. For example, Samsung introduced its 110-inch MicroLED at the end of last year, which is available in the market for the modest sum of $ 150,000 (about 540 million pesos).
Although, at this time the companies are working on making these screens smaller and with a more proportionate price.
OLED vs. MicroLED
OLED screens have become one of the most used technologies in high-end televisions in recent years, although it has also been incorporated into mobile devices, and like the MicroLED system it works through self-emitting pixels, that differ from normal LEDs by having illumination in each of their diodes. Which makes the two technologies offer greater depth in blacks. Among its advantages is also flexibility, which is why it has become an alternative for the creation of folding devices.
“MicroLED comes for cumulative panels of pixels that can be joined to configure screens greater than 100. In OLED it is a complete panel of pixels with independent self-illumination ”, explained Ospina.
The two systems also differ in that OLED has organic diodes, which use materials formed by carbon atoms, and the MicroLED has inorganics, which provide a higher level of brightness, but above all they would have a useful life longer than the first one, so over time there will be no degradation in color. This innovation has a projection of performance up to 100,000 hours, which is nearly a decade of trouble-free use.

And while the two innovations boast higher brightness levels than current technologies, the brightness in MicroLED is almost five times that of an OLED, which the latter can achieve. 1.000 nits, in the other it would reach up to 5,000 nits.
Still, OLED technology is more versatile currently on the market, since it has been implemented in different ranges of devices, and handles prices much lower than those offered by this latest innovation.
