They identify 17 ‘apps’ infected with a dangerous virus on Android
In 17 applications of Google Play Store Zscaler’s computer scientists detected the virus ‘Joker’, which, according to the company, is designed to steal users of their text messages, contacts and other information from their devices.
In addition, the ‘Joker’ accesses bank details to subscribe people to paid services without them noticing.

The company notified the existence of ‘Joker’ to the Google security team so that the ‘apps’ can be removed from its virtual store. According to the report, until September there were more than 120 thousand downloads of these malicious applications.

On his security blog, Google explains that the ‘Joker’ virus was identified in 2017 in messaging applications. Despite the efforts of the company’s technology team, it sometimes manages to go unnoticed in the online store for Android users.
The malicious software uses techniques such as injected clicks, custom HTML parsers, and message receivers to do billing fraud without the user being notified.

The tech giant revealed that these apps can display a pop-up window inviting you to accept false terms and conditions via a confirmation button. However, when you open the tab, what you usually find is a basic welcome message.
It is also common that in the reviews and ratings section of this type of ‘apps’ there are comments with five stars recommending the service, followed by users who give the lowest rating and comment that it is a fraud.

Zscaler recommends users pay attention to the permissions requested by applications and take special care with those that require authorizations related to messaging and contacts.
