In our review, we found that Sony’s true wireless WF-1000XM4 earphones pair excellent audio performance with class-leading active noise cancellation (ANC). If audio performance is your top priority, these are the headphones for you.
Expect rich bass and detailed highs, user-adjustable five-band EQ, and the ability to control the noise cancellation from the Sony Headphones Connect app. We found the fit to be comfortable and the on-ear controls responsive. If the mic on the headphones detects that you’re speaking, it’ll pause whatever is playing, but it’s not overly sensitive so throat clearing or coughing won’t interrupt your music.
Sony puts battery life around 30 hours, or 22 hours when using ANC in wired mode (these come with a cable for wired listening), but your mileage may vary depending on how loud you’re blasting your favorite playlist.

If earbuds are more your style, the WH-1000XM4 delivers similarly excellent audio quality in a smaller package. In our review, we found that these buds give the popular Bose QuietComfort Earbuds a real run for their money. (The Bose QuietComfort Earbuds are also on sale for $199(Opens in a new window)down from $279.)

“From an audio standpoint, Sony’s wire-free headphones sound bass-forward and bright out of the box, and can be adjusted to taste with EQ—something you don’t get with the Bose model,” writes PCMag’s Tim Gideon. “And when it comes to active noise cancellation, this is the first pair of true wireless earphones we’ve tested to edge out the QuietComfort Earbuds in most scenarios.”
The earbuds are rated IPX4 so they should survive a sweaty workout or some rain, though the same can’t be said for the charging case. They can be controlled with a few taps on the exterior panels or in the Sony Headphones app; use the latter to set up Amazon Alexa or the Google Assistant for voice commands. You should be able to get about 8 hours of listening depending on how you use them; the charging case can hold about 16 to 24 hours.
