Luxembourg According to a ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ), Nord Stream 2 AG, which is controlled by the Russian energy group Gazprom, may sue against the EU gas directive. The highest European court on Tuesday overturned a decision by the lower EU court that had initially dismissed a claim by the company (Case C-348/20 P).

It was initially unclear whether the verdict had more than symbolic meaning for Nord Stream 2 AG. The reason is that the company will not be able to put the gas pipeline of the same name into operation in the foreseeable future anyway. The approval process for Nord Stream 2 was stopped by the federal government in February due to the Russian escalation in the Ukraine conflict.
