Google Earth screenshots reveal construction of Russian anti-satellite weapon has begun
Moscow is building an advanced laser system called the Kalina at a Russian space facility, designed to blind enemy satellites.
This project, which began back in 2011, has suffered many delays and we have only been able to learn of its existence from various court documents from 2014 and 2017. However, thanks to some captures taken by Google Earth it has been confirmed that Russia has already got down to work with the construction of Kalina.
And it is that, this is the name that receives the antisatellite weapon designed with the goal of targeting foreign imaging satellites flying over Russian territory, which can permanently blind hostile satellites by emitting laser pulses too intense to damage optical sensors.
The Krona space facility, located near Zelenchukskaya in the far south-west of Russia, is where this complex system is being built and has been seen by Google Earth. Note that this space facility is already known for hosting the huge RATAN-600 radio telescope.
The lack of information due to the incredible secrecy prevents having clearer and more complete data and it is difficult to determine the total capabilities offered by Kalina. However, as the construction progress became known, a new telescope dome could be seen in the location where the process is taking place.
Finally, it should be noted that the report indicates that Russia is developing not one but three laser speeders to be used against satellites, Kalina being one of them.
According to The Washington Post, this “shadow war in space” is already underway. In an article from May 2022, we already reported that Elon Musk claimed that Russia had stepped up its efforts to jam and jam the signals from SpaceX’s Starlink internet satellites.
It seems this war has increased the fight between the two parts of the world as differentiated as there are today. According to Russian analysts, Russia will not allow US and NATO forces to continue exploiting new developments at the space level.
This is why the batteries have been put on and not knowing the full potential of Kalina as an anti-satellite weapon could make Western countries tremble.
