Low-wage sector: Money is not the biggest problem: Why airports, restaurants and logistics companies can’t find workers

Berlin Helping the low-wage sector out of trouble with more wages – that seems to be the motto on the labor market these days. And there is always a need for action: Some sectors are experiencing a real flight of workers. With already strong effects on the public, just think of the desolate situation at the airports recently or long waiting times in restaurants. But is higher wages the solution?

A study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), which is available to the Handelsblatt, shows that the shortage of workers is likely to become even more serious in the near future. A third of the 1,000 deskless workers surveyed in Germany want to change jobs in the next six months.

Deskless workers are people who have to be physically present at their place of work. They include employees in classic minimum-wage jobs such as porters, waitresses or security inspectors at airports. People who are currently missing in their thousands in Germany.
