YouTube can play in picture-in-picture mode on iPhone! Here is what you need to do

YouTube rolls out the picture-in-picture mode for iPhone and iPad users. Here is how you can get it.

YouTube finally brings a feature for iPhone and iPad users that could change the way they consume content. On Android phones, YouTube allowed the ability to play videos in a small pop-up window while you can multitask with other apps. The feature is called the “Picture-in-Picture” and was restricted to the Android platform for a while. Now, YouTube is rolling out the same feature on iPhone and iPad, but with a catch. In fact, most of you reading this on your iPhone may not get to try it at the moment.

YouTube on its social media post says that the Picture-in-Picture mode for YouTube is rolling out iPhone and iPad users around the world. Availability is where it gets interesting – if you subscribe to YouTube Premium membership, you will get it everywhere, provided your country or region gets YouTube Premium. That means that Indian subscribers of YouTube Premium will get to experience the picture-in-picture view on the YouTube app on their iPhones and iPads.

YouTube lets iPhone, iPad users multitask

As for those who don’t pay for YouTube subscription, they have to compromise. YouTube will only allow the mode for the non-Premium users in the US and will restrict it to the non-music app only. Hence, users in the US will be able to watch the video in the small pop-up window but they can’t do that for content on YouTube Music.

For those watching a lot of YouTube content and looking to multitask at the same time, this will be a boon. Especially for iPad users, this feature will change the way they watch videos on YouTube, given the larger realms of the iPad display.

As for Android users, the feature has been here for years and nothing changes for them with this update.

In India, iPhone and iPad users will need to purchase the YouTube Premium subscription in order to enjoy this feature. The YouTube Premium subscription initially offers three months of free service to users and then charges Rs. 129 per month. You can also opt for an annual plan of Rs. 1290, or a family plan of Rs. 189 per month where you can add up to five family members. Additionally, students can go for a monthly plan of Rs. 79 per month. The membership offers an ad-free experience as well as background playback, downloads, and access to YouTube Music Premium.
