7 series based on movies, and some are very little known
Whenever we see a good series, the same question comes to mind: how did they come up with the idea? This question has multiple answers. From the fact that it is a plagiarism of a classic from the 30s, until a day of fishing with friends came to mind.
For those who used neither one technique nor the other, but a mixture of both, there is the origin based on inspiration. An original idea that was exploited at the time is taken up again to approach it in a different way, or in a more exhaustive way, with a second look in series format.
How many times have we finished a good movie and cursed out loud because there were no sequels to it, or books that expanded the story a little more. What happened to us reading Dune when Frank Herbert released the first book (and happened to us with the publication of the fourteenth).
Today we are going, precisely, with those series that did the job of expanding a universe that we liked, or an idea that caught our attention so much that the two hours of film seemed few to us. And the key is to surprise you with our choice of series. The objective? You will be surprised.
Without further ado, let’s go with the most amazing series -and maybe the best- that have emerged from an original film. Are you able to guess them all? Let’s see it.
7 series based on movies, and some are very little known
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Young Buffy and her mother move from Los Angeles to the town of Sunnydale. But what this young woman and her mother don’t know is that in the subsoil of the town lives the Master, the oldest and most powerful vampire that exists.
The Master is trapped in the mystical point called The Mouth of Hell, which the Master tried to open when, due to an earthquake, he was trapped, decades ago. And it just so happens that Buffy is, by birthright, the vampire slayer.
If you are between 30 and 40 years old, this series delighted your adolescence. Action, adventures, murderous vampires everywhere and a lot of actors and actresses, handsome as themselves. It had everything to succeed and that’s how it was: it lasted 7 full seasons on the air.
What not everyone knows is that this series is based on a movie called Buffy the Vampire Slayer that was released in 1992, about five years before the series came into our lives. The curious thing is that for the television drama they did not take the same actors as for the movie.
- Title: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
- Release date: 1997
- Duration: 43 minute episodes
- Platform: Disney+
Hannibal
Will Graham, who works for the FBI as a crime analyst, has an innate ability to empathize with psychopaths, allowing him to understand their motivations. But when he realizes that the mind of the serial killer he’s searching for is too complex even for him, he enlists the help of one of the country’s leading psychiatrists, Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
As you can see, the synopsis of this series is identical to the movie The Silence of the Lambs. which, in 1991, catapulted Julian Moore to fame and confirmed that Anthony Hopkins was a gifted actor.
For the series, the producers did not hesitate to sign an actor up to the task to play the key character, Hannibal Lecter. As you may have noticed from the cover of this section, said actor is none other than Mad Mickelsen, at that time a superb actor with not much fame outside of Denmark.
In June 2015, NBC confirmed the cancellation of the series after three very successful seasons, but that is not an obstacle to enjoying a great television work, especially if you are a fan of the original films.

- Release date: 2013
- Duration: 43 minute episodes

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
The series returns to the world of Thra with a new adventure. When three Gelfling discover the horrible secret behind the power of the Skeksis, they embark on an epic journey to light the fires of rebellion and save their world. This was sung, since it was one of the bombshells of 2019 on Netflix.
In 1982 there was a movie that amazed an entire generation that watched as a dark fantasy movie swept theaters. The budget, for the time, was enormous: 25 million dollars. And it’s normal, everything was handmade and the mastermind behind everything was Jim Henson.
If the style of the movie reminds you of anything, it’s the Muppets: all the characters were puppets that were manipulated to bring them to life, which is why the film has aged so well and the series has managed to maintain the spirit of the 80s without losing visual power.
This Netflix bet was quite liked by lovers of the original film, who now put it on their children -even grandchildren-, since those 40 years in between have not passed in vain.
- Title: The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
- Release date: 2019
- Duration: 57 minute episodes
- Platform: Netflix
Westworld
Westworld is a futuristic, high-tech controlled amusement park run by Dr. Robert Ford (again, Anthony Hopkins). The facilities have androids whose physical appearance is human, and thanks to them, visitors can unleash their instincts and experience any type of adventure or fantasy, no matter how dark or dangerous it may be.
As you well know, a few days ago HBO Max premiered the fourth season of a series that is driving fans crazy. And not in a good way, but in the strict sense of the word: nobody understands anything.
For the most movie buffs, this series does not catch them by surprise on our list. But for ordinary mortals this is a revelation and an important one. Westworld, the series, is based on Westworld, the film and book by Michael Crichton that premiered in 1973. Its translation into Spanish was Almas de metal.
This example perfectly covers that situation that we described at the beginning: very good ideas that deserved to be told with more time and with more care. Without a doubt, the first season is a highly recommended work of art.
- Title: Westworld
- Release date: 2016
- Duration: 60 minute episodes
- Platform: hbo max
Fargo
Lester Nygaard, a diffident insurance salesman in small town Minnesota, finds his world turned upside down by the arrival of a mysterious and wild stranger. With this beginning he begins a series that has been on the air for several seasons and many awards.
Series based on the film of the same name by the Coen brothersalthough it features different characters and is set in 2006, the original work is from 1996 and was so popular that it had to become a series. Again, an example of a film that needed a proper continuation.
Despite the fact that the first season is set in 2006, the different installments have been changing the date until reaching Fargo IV (the fourth season), which is set in 1950 and with actors of the stature of Crish Rock, who in addition to being slapped is a great comedian and actor.
It is available on both HBO Max and Movistar Plus+, so depending on the service you have contracted, you will have to open one or the other platform. It is very much worth it.

What we do in the shadows
Set in New York, it follows three vampires who have been roommates for hundreds and hundreds of years, and recounts their experiences during that period in a mockumentary format. This series, which arrived on the platforms in 2019, has an origin that you already suppose: an original movie.
What We Do in the Shadows (2014) was one of the first productions by Taika Waititi, a director/actor who has been an enormous success in the last five years. To give you an idea, he is the director of the last two Thor movies, including the recently released Love and Thunder.
This series is, of all that we have on the list, the only one that is clearly humorous. Despite its dark and macabre atmosphere (they are vampires, without going any further)the genre of the series is purely comic… with touches of terror.
In this case, we have the series on both Disney + and HBO Max, since there is nothing like being able to choose where we see our favorite series.

- Release date: 2019
- Duration: 30 minute episodes
- Platform: Disney+
Ash vs Evil Dead
Ash has spent the last thirty years avoiding growing up and fighting the horrors spawned from the Necronomicon. He’s still the same foul-mouthed know-it-all as ever, but suddenly finds that he must pick up his chainsaw again to fight off a plague of Deadites that threatens to destroy all of humanity as he tries to come to terms with his past.
We’ve been watching Bruce Campbell kill zombies since 1992, when Sam Raimi directed Army of Darkness. Since then, life is a little better and the audiovisual world a brighter and more beautiful place… despite the fact that the series is about killing hellish monsters.
If you liked the original movie, this series is totally unmissable. If you’re too young to have seen the 1992 play, it doesn’t matter, it’s worth putting on now. We said that What We Do in the Shadows was the only comedy series, but we were lying: Ash vs Evil Dead is pure laughter.
Do yourself a favor and turn on Netflix right now to enjoy the three seasons that have been made so far (it’s been cancelled, so don’t expect many more, the fact that a series already exists is a miracle).
- Title: Ash vs. Evil Dead
- Release date: 2015
- Duration: 30 minute episodes
- Platform: Netflix
