What is the perfect laptop? The perfect laptop is you
I am that family member or friend that people ask, what laptop should I buy? When they do, I throw Becquerian poetry and tell them: What is the perfect laptop? You say, while you nail your blue eye on me, What is the perfect laptop! Are you asking me that? The perfect laptop… it’s you.
Lowering the poetic intensity a bit, have you ever wondered if the perfect laptop exists? I continuously and, after more years than I will confess in the noble art of putting together letters about technology, I have come to the conclusion that only you are able to answer that question.
I’m going to state the obvious, but It is very likely that I do not use the laptop for the same thing as you or your neighbor. That is why there is no clear and universal answer for everyone, but the fact is that the last laptops I have analyzed have shown me that choosing a laptop is going to look more and more like choosing underwear or shoes. Everything will depend on your preferences, habits and needs.
There was a time when practically all laptops followed very similar guidelines, they were almost clones like the TikTok twins. They had their reasons and one of them is that the work scenarios that these laptops allowed were not very broad and their features were quite limited.
Now instead there are as many laptops as you want to use them, with very different and specific sizes, weights, features and designs to ensure the best performance in a given activity. This is the reason, and allow me the Becquerian license of the title that heads these paragraphs, the perfect laptop is a reflection of who you are.
Laptops have specialized in tasksso a gaming laptop offers you different features than a design workstation can offer you, even though they share 95% of their hardware and even more.
👩🎓 Laptops for students, or for general use. They are the most similar to the conventional laptops of yesteryear, designed to cover the widest possible range of uses at a reasonable price.
They say jack of all trades, master of none, so these types of laptops will not stand out especially for the performance of its hardware, its screen or its dimensions, but they are very affordable and balanced equipment.
A good example of this type of laptop is found in the Huawei MateBook 16 that we analyzed a few weeks ago.
🕹 gaming laptops. As their name suggests, they are laptops optimized for gaming at the highest level. Within this category we find more esports oriented laptopsor laptops armed to the teeth to run the latest games with full graphics like the Razer Blade 17 with RTX 3080 Ti.
🎨Laptops for design and content creators. This is a relatively new option. Until now, designers and video or photo editors were forced to use gaming laptops to access the graphic power required by rendering programs and video and photo editors.
However, there are now laptops specialized in responding to this professional segment by integrating the most powerful hardware, but with the right connectors and a much more discreet and professional-looking design.
A good example of this is the MSI Creator Z17 that we have tested, or the excellent 14-inch MacBook Pro that also passed through our test table.
🏃🏽♂️ Laptops for mobility. It may seem like a truism to say that a laptop can be for mobility, but not all laptops have been designed to withstand long hours of work away from a plug, while maintaining productivity and connectivity.
Its main Achilles heel is power (more than enough for office work, but insufficient, for example, for video editing) and the availability of physical ports.
On the other hand, they make up for it by being extremely light laptops of just 1 Kg, very compact and with very good networking and wireless equipment. Ultrabooks like the Dell XPS 13 represent the essence of this type of laptop.
✏️ 2-in-1 convertible laptops. Can’t decide between a tablet and a laptop? You do not have to do it! Within the segment of mobile laptops, we find 2-in-1 laptops that offer all the ease of use and efficiency of conventional laptops, and the versatility of touch use of tablets. The Asus VivoBook Slate 13 OLED or the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 are some of the examples that best define this category.
🧑🏽💻laptops for work. The paradigm of work environments has changed a lot in the last two years, and teleworking or hybrid work is here to stay, claiming new tools to support it.
From this has been born a new concept of laptops specially designed to work in an office, but with the advantage of closing the lid and being able to take it home with you to continue teleworking with the same guarantees and comfort.
Just a week ago we reviewed the Huawei MateBook D16, a laptop that mounts a huge 16-inch screen, an excellent assortment of connectors and an exceptional keyboard and touchpad to spend hours working comfortably both from the office and from home without changing equipment.
This is just a small sample of the types of laptops out there today, so before you consider which laptop to choose, maybe you should take a few minutes to think about what kind of user you are and what you do in your day to day life.
