This is how Starlink works, Elon Musk’s internet that will soon operate in Colombia

August 6, 2022 technolgy-news No Comments

Elon Musk has a new and ambitious project that will soon reach all parts of the world. This is satellite internet, which is already in the testing phase in some countries.

Musk, a fan of technology, would be looking for a way to revolutionize internet connections. The tycoon wants to increase the speed of WiFi, feeding on other sources.

In full swing of 5G and new networks, it is increasingly important to have a fast and efficient connection to the internet. That is why the South African created Starlink, a service that will go hand in hand with other company projects such as Tesla and SpaceX.

In fact, this last company will be in charge of putting into orbit the more than 12 thousand satellites with which Musk plans to bring the internet to earth. The South African is interested in improving the connectivity of rural areas.

Although greedy, the idea of Elon Musk is not new and there are already other services that offer satellite internet. Its plan then is to enter the market to compete with a more advanced and efficient proposal.

What is StarLink?

It is a satellite internet service offered in all parts of the world. People who acquire it will have to pay a monthly fee to the company to be able to connect their devices.

The beta phase carried out in Spain found that they could reach speeds between 50 and 150 Mbps in just 20 or 40 milliseconds. The billionaire’s idea is to complement what is offered by fiber optics and 5G networks.

“With high speeds and latency as low as 20ms in most locations, Starlink enables video calls, online gaming, streaming and other high data rate activities that have not historically been possible with satellite Internet. Users also have the option of taking Starlink with them through the Portability feature or the Starlink RV service,” the company explains on its website.

Although it is still in testing phases, Starlink can now be ordered online from anywhere in the world. This will ensure that those who order it now are the first to enjoy the new technology.

How does StarLink work?

After ordering the service online, a set with a power source, base, Starlink, WiFi router and cables will arrive at the users’ homes.

Installation is designed to be simple. The antenna should be placed in an area that has a clear view of the sky. Neither trees nor power poles can cover Starlink signals.

It would be best to install it in an elevated area to avoid problems. Then it must be plugged in, the antenna must point to the sky and the satellite signals will reach the WiFi router to give the house internet.

SpaceX will create a network of satellites in Earth orbit that will cover the entire planet. These will send connections through electromagnetic waves.

Starlink already has a price range on their website. The installation kit will have a value of 499 euros. Shipping will cost 60 and the monthly subscription to the service will be 99 euros per month. Which means that In Colombia, the total price that must be paid to start with Starlink will be approximately 2,911,682 million pesos.

Will operate in Colombia

The Ministry of Information Technology and Communications officially granted permission to Starlink to operate in the country. According to the authorities, the project offers an opportunity to improve the connection of rural areas in the territory.

“In our route to close the digital gap from all points of view, the entry of this new company into the country meant a substantial improvement in the way in which the regions will be connected, because thanks to the satellite technology of actors such as Starlink, it will expand the offer in the market, and thanks to the benefits established in the new regime, the money that the MinTIC stops receiving in terms of payments for spectrum use can be reinvested to improve the service to the end user”, said Carmen Ligia Valderrama Rojas , ICT Minister.

Resolution 376 of 2022 seeks to open the way for new satellite companies to arrive in the country. With this same permission, it will seek to improve 4G and 5G connections in Colombia.
